Research roadmapping

  • Roadmapping workshops helped to create the National Platform ICT and Automation Strategic Research Programme.
  • Workshops bring together a range of stakeholders effectively and efficiently.
  • They ensured that the research programme recommendations obtained industry endorsement.

Arup facilitated roadmapping workshops as part of a scoping study for the National Platform for construction. The study developed the organisation's strategic research agenda for ICT and automation (ICTA) into an industry-led prioritised strategic research programme. Adopting a roadmapping approach ensured that the programme’s recommendations obtained industry endorsement.

Funded by a combination of industry and government (BERR), the project aimed to understand the role that ICT and automation could play in supporting the future competitiveness of the UK construction industry. Roadmapping helped to identify what types of information, communication and automation technologies were needed and how they could successfully be integrated in response to the changes driving the industry.

Two roadmapping workshops involved 29 delegates from a broad range of industry backgrounds, including clients, funders, consultants, contractors, vendors, suppliers and academics. The workshop format was ideal because it brought together a range of stakeholders but required only around a day of senior executives' time.

Output from the workshops was analysed to consolidate and prioritise the 'super-roadmap' and create the National Platform ICTA Strategic Research Programme. The roadmap will be used to influence the research programmes identified by organisations such as the European Construction Technology Platform and to develop research projects in the recommended areas.
