Sokol City

  • A new 99.8m high office building in St Petersburg.
  • Arup provided structural engineering, wind engineering and geotechnical engineering with a multi-office team from St Petersburg, Cardiff and London.
  • Wind tunnel testing in BMT laboratory in London.

Sokol City, on Bogatirskyi Prospect in the north of St Petersburg, is one of the exciting new projects currently being designed and developed together with Sergei Padalko from Vitruvii & Sons Architectural Bureau.

Arup was involved as the structural engineer on this development and also brought specialist wind engineering and geotechnical engineering skills to the project. Working with a multi-office team from St PetersburgCardiff and London, the design of this 99.8m high, 132,500m² office and commercial building was developed on time and within budget.

Arup was able to bring the very latest technology from the specialist wind engineering group, with a scope of work that included the wind tunnel testing in the BMT laboratory in London.

Arup’s scope also included geotechnical specifications and technical briefs for structural design.

It is really pleasing to see the appetite of young and progressive design architects such as Vitruvii and Sons, for not only aiming to catch up with Western standards of architecture and design, but also for creating buildings that are outstanding and truly Russian.
