We invest in innovative people to create products that solve challenges in the built environment.
Developing successful products requires design, technical and commercial insight. Arup’s specialists have the combined understanding to devise and shape products that create better buildings.
Many of our products are economical, practical responses to the sustainability challenges many organisations face – they use fewer materials and resources and recycled or low-carbon materials.
Arup brings products to the marketplace through commercial partnerships with clients, designers, contractors and manufacturers. By creating, retaining and licensing intellectual property, we create and capitalise on new business opportunities.
Understanding the issues
Our products succeed because they are underpinned by the wealth of market knowledge, creativity and technical expertise within Arup.
Our formidable experience in sports building design, for example, shaped the concept for the Abacus Stadium Seat – a high-performance, low-cost product that meets the stringent requirements of sports facilities.
Solving construction challenges
Arup knows that organisations face the same challenges on projects again and again. We help developers identify and pursue inventive, reliable solutions that reduce risk and improve quality and efficiency.
The Technik Floor system, developed by Arup with partners Grants and Lindner, substantially reduces the drying time and risk associated with traditional flooring installations. More than 65,000m2 of this flooring has already been installed on projects including Heathrow Terminal 5C and More London.
Increasingly, developers seek high-performance materials that help them meet sustainability best practice and regulatory demands.
Working again with Grants, we developed Technik Wall, a façade system which provides insulation against heat transfer. The prefabricated building envelope solution is ready-made with internal paint and fixings, as well as an external rain screen.
A network for innovation
Creative ideas alone do not guarantee success. Arup assesses the commercial potential of ideas and markets. We develop designs and solutions, establish manufacturing and route-to-market partnerships, and develop positioning and market entry strategies.
We call on Arup’s advanced capability in virtual testing, materials science, fire performance, commercial strategy and environmental and structural optimisation. Arup’s network allows us to work with acoustic designers, for instance, to develop products such as Sound Scoop – an acoustically optimised air vent designed to prevent the travel of unwelcome noise into naturally ventilated buildings.
