Our custom-made solutions power successful ventures and critical improvements.
Arup takes power projects from ideas to successful commercial operations with full coverage of expertise in electricity transmission and distribution (T&D).
Our experience encompasses all power networks, including long-distance power transmission lines, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnectors, wind inter-array and export cable networks, on- and offshore substations as well as medium voltage distribution networks for industrial and urban settings.
Arup’s engineers lead feasibility studies, planning, detailed design and independent technical appraisals. We integrate technical strength with services that meet clients’ all-round needs, including project management, stakeholder engagement, environmental consulting and investment and risk advice.
Understanding power provision
By working with national and regional network operators, investors and developers we have come to know their pressures. Our thirst for problem-solving helps clients meet their challenges, from tightening compliance to increasing demand.
For EDF Energy, one of the UK’s big-six suppliers, Arup maintained critical power supply while solving complex design challenges to modernise Limeburner Lane Substation. The design accommodated a live switchroom in the basement during construction, and made use of the existing pile foundations and tunnel ventilation system. But perhaps the biggest hurdle was the building’s planning-approved height. Arup’s T&D experts answered that challenge by reconfiguring the 132kV gas-insulated switchgear to suit the tight space.
Finding a better way
Arup collaborates with clients to bring value beyond their base requirements and realise their bigger business goals. To do this, we often challenge standard approaches.
We pioneered a new norm with our design for the Heart of Doha substations, including Qatar’s first fully underground substation. Its footprint is significantly smaller than a traditional above-ground substation, freeing valuable urban space for commercial development.
Power within the big picture
We see T&D’s place in the context of sustainable energy and better urban development – a view that takes account of the economic, environmental and human requirements that contribute to thriving communities.
In Sydney, one of Australia’s fast-expanding urban centres, we are providing multidisciplinary services for the City East Zone, a significant commercial development that will also upgrade the city’s infrastructure. The project includes a zone substation that will cater for projected growth in demand and improve the resilience of supply to Sydney’s central business district.
