The challenges of water management are both global and local, affecting all types of communities and environments.
Over one billion people struggle everyday to find enough clean water with which to live. Poor sanitation poses a major threat to human health and improved management of hygiene and wastewater is needed worldwide. Those benefiting from a reliable water supply and adequate sanitation face different issues which include recognising the true value of water and handling the increasing demand for efficiency and quality.

Watch: Water for life - a film about Arup's work across the water cycle (3:37 mins)
Decision and policy makers and those involved with water industries have a fundamental responsibility to these communities to address these issues. Meeting these challenges requires an integrated approach across increasingly diverse disciplines and management approaches – a challenge ideally suited to Arup’s breadth of skills and holistic, collaborative approach.
Infrastructure design
Arup provides a 'total design' approach to clients from pre-feasibility through to handover and operation, and beyond. Arup’s long standing relationships with water companies, and industrial and commercial water users in the UK and abroad gives the firm the breadth of experience to undertake work on all aspects of water engineering in vastly differing conditions and climates.
As the Yorkshire Water Services Framework Technical Consultant, Arup was engaged to provide feasibility, outline design, tender management and contract administration services over the five year delivery programme on a scheme valued at over £300m.
Flood risk management
Arup is at the forefront of flood risk management, offering modelling and mapping services coupled with holistic design of protection and mitigation measures.
CityFlood is a project funded by the Northumbrian and Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committees (RFDC) which aims to better understand the issues associated with the modelling and mapping of surface water and combined surface water/river/coastal flooding in urban areas across the North East Region.
Water resources, sustainable water management and water strategy
As the challenges of climate change continue, the relationship with water will evolve: safe, clean, usable water should be seen as a finite resource and protected. Arup is working with local, national and international organisations to deliver projects and services safe guarding our future water supply. All aspects of the urban water cycle are considered and strategies are developed which attain sustainability objectives without compromising environmental or human health.
Arup’s water engineering teams develop strategies to ensure facilities providing urban developments align with sustainable building and environmental practices.
Research, development, ID and bespoke services
Sustainability remains at the heart of everything Arup does and to provide sustainable solutions to current and future problems, a thorough understanding of the problem is required. Through work with internal research groups, universities, international organisations and aid agencies Arup is developing solutions to ensure the needs of future generations are met.
Asset management
Asset management is a key factor for many organisations affecting their budgeting requirements and future plans. Arup offers independent review of existing assets, including an assessment of defects, possible future lifespan and alternatives to the current assets.
