Ian Gardner

Former Global Energy Systems Leader

Ian was previously Arup’s Global Energy Leader, prior to his retirement after a career spanning 44 years with the firm. In this role he helped lead and develop our footprint in the energy market across the world and be positioned to ensure value for clients. He oversaw the direction of our energy business and services offerings including advisory, systems and structures. Working closely with clients and policy-setters across the energy market worldwide to provide insights into the market and advice on complex programmes from nuclear to renewable energy, applications for hydrogen and the decarbonisation of transport.

Ian’s experience included the leadership and management of large multi-disciplinary design and construction teams in all stages of projects from inception, procurement and design to completion. This work took various forms including programme and project procurement and he authored “Achieving Successful Construction Projects” – a guide for industry leaders and programme managers. Previously at Arup, Ian had led the infrastructure London group covering transport, energy, civil engineering, site regeneration, maritime, geotechnics, tunnels and major projects.

In addition to his work in energy, his most memorable achievements have been setting up the firm’s Berlin office following the reunification of Germany, being instrumental in delivering the iconic HS1 project and St Pancras Station, the London Olympic Park, M’sheireb Doha and HS2.

Ian is an Arup Fellow, a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Fellow of the Energy Institute, Member of the Institution of Royal Engineers and was from 2009 - 2020 a member of the firm’s UKIMEA Board. He has also been a member of the World Energy Council’s UK board, is a Freeman of the City of London and court member of the Worshipful Company of Paviors. He has been a frequent panellist and speaker at industry events, including at recent World Energy Congresses.
