I am Arup’s digital leader in the UK, India, Middle East and Africa region and am a member of the regional board. I provide strategy and direction as we work to fulfil our firm’s ambition to be the digital leader in the built environment.

From joining Arup in the 1980s as a geotechnical specialist, I went on to lead the firm’s geotechnics practice worldwide up until 2011. Since then I have been leading teams on the delivery of large scale infrastructure projects – for land reclamation, clean/waste water infrastructure, other waste management and disposal, highways, railways and nuclear facilities. I am a member – and previous chair – of Sellafield’s Infrastructure Strategic Alliance board. This £1.1bn programme covers energy, transport, water and buildings projects on one of the most hazardous industrial sites in the world.

I have seen digital tools come of age during my career. By innovating with data and new technology and automating many repetitive tasks, digital tools have freed us as civil engineers to focus on where we create most value. My role is to see us explore and exploit all that the digital transformation of our work makes possible.

I still follow my initial calling as a geotechnical engineer and act as an expert advisor in mediation, arbitration and litigation in the UK’s High Court.
