Your best solution to date?

The development of a security policy and strategy for the Western Cape Government in South Africa.

Why is it significant?

We advised the Western Cape Government on the analysis of safety and security issues and developed policy, strategy and implementation plans as part of their overall strategy to become the best run provincial government in the world. The opportunity to work from cabinet level through government departments to institutions was fascinating. I felt that we were making a real contribution to attempts to improve the life of the population in the Western Cape.

Your particular skill?

Being able to see the wide spectrum of security issues and solutions and understanding how to balance the elements to suit particular clients and projects.

Always trying to improve not only the Arup services and how we deliver them but also working to assist in the professional development of staff in the security industry and the proficiency of the security industry overall.

Why Arup?

The opportunity to work with bright, enthusiastic colleagues in a culture that encourages creativity and new ideas.

Anything else?

Various committees for professional institutions including in the past a council member of the Security Institute and member of the training committee of the IET. I am currently a steering group member of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists.
