Arup has over 45 years’ presence in Greater China, providing a full spectrum of design, engineering, planning and consulting services. We have worked on many of the region’s most iconic structures, including the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube in Beijing, Tai Kwun and M+ in Hong Kong and Taipei Performing Arts Centre in Taipei. We are involved in cross-boundary facilities that are helping to forge closer ties in the territory, including Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, and planning and development of Lok Ma Chau Loop.

Shanghai

We started working in Shanghai in 1984 when we were entrusted with the structural design of the Hilton Shanghai which became the city’s tallest building on completion.

Today our projects can be seen everywhere in the city, including iapm and Jing’an Kerry Centre on Puxi’s well-established commercial streets; The Hub, a sustainable business community in Hongqiao CBD; TODTOWN, a mini-city atop the Xinzhuang Metro Station; and The Harbour City at the centre of Lujiazui CBD – a large-scale redevelopment at the former Shanghai Shipyard site whose history dates back to 1862.

We have also greatly contributed to the international events previously held in the city, including the masterplanning and design for the Denmark Pavilion, Korean Pavilion and Singapore Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo and the redevelopment of the Urban Best Practice Area.

The Shanghai office is Arup’s first foothold in mainland China and provides a wide range of services. In addition to serving the needs of the local market, the office is active throughout the Yangtze River Delta Region.
