York

With its rich history, architecture, Roman walls and iconic Minster, York has provided the backdrop to numerous major political and social events throughout much of its two millennia. Within the historic foundations of an ancient city lies a thriving economy, proudly embracing its heritage whilst using new technologies to pave the way for future growth.

The York office has been open since 2010, although Arup’s relationship with the city dates back to many year’s previous, with a long-standing relationship advising York Minster. Arup in York employs over 30 staff and places great emphasis on diversity and learning and development, with two apprenticeships offered in the last two years.

Our presence in the city allows us to provide rail consultancy and design services to Network Rail, contractors and operators. Our specialist rail knowledge has been applied to projects across the country, including the Great Western Route Modernisation, the Intercity Express Programme and HS2. More locally, we have provided advice on improving the linespeed on the ECML, and on improvements to York station.

A £2bn mining project, York Potash, will allow access to the world’s largest and highest grade of polyhalite, a form of potash renowned for its capability to deliver strong crop growth. With Arup providing tunnel and feasibility design for a mineral transportation system, the polyhalite will be transported underground from mine site to port – a distance of over 35 km.

York Central, a large city centre brownfield development site will provide a vibrant new city quarter for residents and businesses. Arup are playing a key role in planning and master-planning, as the retained technical advisor. Our teams will work with city stakeholders to create 120,000m2 of office space, 2,500 homes and over 7,000 jobs.

The stunning, award-winning four storey head office of Hiscox insurance group engineered by Arup, exceeded the client’s expectations for a show-piece building. Using innovation in design, our team created a breath-taking staircase and atrium making a striking impression on the entry to the building. The newly refurbished Victorian York Art Gallery demonstrates how our structural engineers were able to use innovation to tackle the redesign of a listed cultural building.

Our work in the city is not limited to business activity – we engage with the local community, as members of York Cares, and are supporters of several local schools and both of the city’s universities.
