The way in which humanity is making the places it lives in, is undergoing a change unequalled in the history of human existence. As the population of the earth continues to grow, and the expectation and implications of the way we live changes, there is an ever‑increasing need and recognition of the value of designing the urban places of habitation. Arup is uniquely placed to lead the way in delivering the urban places of the 21st century.
Successful environments can be created through the integration of the following factors:
Understanding the issues associated with contemporary livingIt is important to allow the ever-changing issues most relevant to contemporary life to influence and evaluate the way in which people want to live and work.
Learning from successful placesUnderstanding successful and unsuccessful precedents ensures that time tested principles are acknowledged and utilized where appropriate.
Applying innovation and appropriate technologyInnovation with established technologies combined with a broad knowledge of leading edge, particularly local technologies, can be harnessed to establish advantage and opportunity.
Delivering solutions that are realisticThe pursuit of the leading edge must be balanced against deliverability in time, technology and budget.
The Integrated Urbanism team forms the design focus for urban projects with Arup and is committed to integrated design solutions that balance social, economic, physical and temporal parameters, creating unique and authentic new urban environments. The team has be working on masterplanning for over 25 years alongside other UK and worldwide groups within Arup.
The practice has an intrinsic agenda addressing:
- Efficient land use
- Infrastructure efficiency
- Economics
- Micro-climate
- Sociology
- Ecology
- Hydrology
- Energy usage
These agendas form the focus of our desire to create sustainable communities, particularly with the potential of bringing new life for brownfield sites.
