21 September 2009

Friday 18 September was a successful night for Arup’s Sydney office, with two projects taking a total of four Engineering Excellence Awards.

Arup won the Building and Structures category of the 2009 Sydney Division - with our co-entrants Brookfield Multiplex and Lincolne Scott – for the One Shelley Street, Sydney project. Arup provided structural and fire engineering for this distinctive new building in Sydney's King Street Wharf. The building has a striking external diagrid and a full height, eleven-storey internal atrium.

John Hewitt, structural engineer on the project was delighted with the win. “One Shelley Street was a great project to work on, with a wonderful team of people,” he said. “It sets a benchmark here in Sydney for environmental design, atrium design and the use of structural steel.”

In the same category the stunning new National Portrait Gallery, Canberra also received a merit award, with our co-entrants John Holland and Steensen Varming. Arup provided seven separate services on the project including: structural, civil, transport, façade, fire, acoustic and geotechnical engineering.

The National Portrait Gallery was also a winner at the 2009 Concrete Institute of Australia Awards. It received the Excellence in Building Project award and the prestigious Kevin Kavanagh Medal for Excellence, which recognised the Gallery as the overall winner from all the categories for an outstanding contribution to the quality of concrete construction in Australia.

It was also announced the National Portrait Gallery would be put forward for the International Concrete Awards to be held in Greece. The project architect JPW, and building contractor John Holland attended the awards ceremony and are also proud of the awards.
