Carbon War Room throws spotlight on clean tech opportunities in Australasia

14 July 2011

The Creating Climate Wealth Summit held in Sydney from 7-8 July brought together decision makers from a variety of backgrounds to identify specific actions and opportunities to accelerate deployment of clean tech solutions in the Australasia region.

Senior Associate for sustainability at Arup, Tim Jarvis, co-facilitated the Agriculture Food and Carbon working track. Mr Jarvis noted that in his travels around the Asia Pacific region he had seen strong support for sustainable technologies and skills. “I keep thinking this is the sort of capability Australia should have, but we don’t.”

“Australia could be among the most affected by climate change, yet it also has enormous access to many forms of renewable energy,” Mr Jarvis said.

Arup Australasia board member and buildings practice leader, Peter Bowtell co-chaired the Construction Innovation work track. He said: “The workshop process stimulated fresh thinking and focused on the key areas where breakthroughs are needed to generate economic value and environmental benefits for the region.”

Arup will continue to support the Construction Innovation working track over the coming year, with the aim of translating ideas generated at the Summit into realistic action plans and market trials in areas such as results-based procurement, urban food production and innovation funding sources.

Arup is at the forefront of developments in clean tech, energy efficiency and carbon positive design.

It is hoped that events like the Creating Climate Wealth Summit will stimulate an increased appetite for investment and R&D in clean tech. The Summit was organised by Sir Richard Branson’s non-profit group, the Carbon War Room, in association with Future Journeys and in affiliation with Arup.
