Stonecutters Bridge wins IRF Global Road Achievement Award 2010

26 January 2011

Stonecutters Bridge has been named winner of the Design category in the International Road Federation’s (IRF) Global Road Achievement Awards 2010.

The awards recognise excellence and innovation in the transportation industry.

Stonecutters Bridge is the centrepiece of the new Route 8 strategic link, a 7.6km long, dual three-lane expressway linking Cheung Sha Wan and Tsing Yi Island in Hong Kong.

Opened to traffic in December 2009, it is the world’s second longest spanning cable-stayed bridge.

The project team was presented with the winning trophy at the IRF Annual Awards banquet on Tuesday 25 January in Washington.

Steve Kite, project manager, said, “We are thrilled to win this award. This was an exciting project to deliver and include design challenges associated with the very large scale of the structure, design for an aggressive wind climate, and planning construction operations with minimal impact on shipping using the waterway below.
