Ground broken on new Toronto airport tunnel

19 Mar 2012

A groundbreaking ceremony for a new pedestrian tunnel to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport was held on March 9.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford were in attendance.

The new tunnel will improve access to Toronto’s downtown airport (currently reachable only by ferry), accommodating the movement of over 1,000 people per hour.

Arup is lead engineering designer for the project, responsible for the design of the tunnel and associated water and sewer mains. We are also providing acoustic, IT and communications, and security consulting. Our engineering solution addresses the multiple challenges involved in the construction of a watertight 33-foot-wide tunnel 130ft below ground.

The $82.5M effort is scheduled for completion in April 2014.

The project is being delivered using a DBFM public-private partnership model. The winning consortium is led by Forum Equity Partners, with PCL as contractor and Technicore Underground as the tunnelling subcontractor. Design partners include ZAS Architects and Interiors and Exp Geotechnical Engineers.
