The new Alaska Airlines terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has been unveiled, marking another milestone in the airport’s modernisation program.

The remodel of Terminal 6, Alaska Airlines new home, includes multiple improvements. Travellers can now expect an Alaska Airlines customer-focused ‘Airport of the Future’ which redefines passenger flows for check-in, bag check, and ticketing. Once through the expanded security screening area there is a redesigned lounge for first class passengers and waiting areas with laptop power at the gates. Not visible to the travelling public is an improved baggage handling system and ramp support spaces for Alaska Airlines personnel.

By moving to Terminal 6, Alaska Airlines was also able to improve efficiency since they no longer needed to split their arriving aircraft between terminals dependent on whether they had domestic or international passengers, and then relocate the aircraft before departure.

With a short 13-month construction time-frame, team members collaborated to ensure the $238m project was completed on time and $33m under the original $271m budget.

The new terminal also showcases many sustainable design features in accordance with the USGBC LEED® certification process. These include low-flow water fixtures to reduce consumption by 30%, energy-efficient lighting systems, and Energy Star-certified appliances.

The Arup team was fortunate to be working with a highly collaborative and responsive Owner, Design Builder, and Architect, in Alaska Airlines, Hensel-Phelps, and Fentress Architects allowing us to explore and then focus on the chosen design solutions in a challenging timescale. ” Richard Tregaskes Associate

Arup’s Los Angeles office provided bridging documents for mechanicalelectricalplumbingIT, security, and lighting design throughout the renovated areas to allow the chosen subcontractors to understand the design intent and then complete the final engineering of the systems.

The upgrade of Terminal 6 is part of the $4.1 billion package of multiple improvements to LAX which also includes the Central Utility Plant
