Florence Lam, leader of Arup's global lighting practice, became the first woman to win the coveted Lighting Designer of the Year Award at the Lighting Design Awards.
The award is given to a designer who has exhibited exceptional lighting design skills, innovation and vision over the past year.
Florence was commended by the judges, who commented:
“She believes in the concept of total architecture and that lighting plays an important part, not just in revealing the architecture of a space, but also in delivering a healthy environment for the occupants. The award recognises not just a portfolio of excellent work but also her efforts in nurturing new talent and the way she constantly gives back to the industry.
Arup also won the Daylight Award, which recognises projects that make innovative use of daylight to reduce energy consumption and improve wellbeing. Arup’s lighting design for King’s Cross Station Western Concourse (watch the film) was also highly commended in this category.
UP, and Away! – Arup’s 'light art' project was highly commended in the Special Projects category. This interactive lighting artwork consists of five recycled bicycles with psychedelic wings that light up according to the rider’s speed to offer an illuminating experience of flight. Originally commissioned for Vivid Sydney 2012, UP, and away! is currently on tour around the world.
The 11th annual Lighting Design Awards took place in London and was attended by more than 740 of the country’s leading lighting designers, manufacturers and architects.
