Arup has been presented with three awards at the 2013 ACE Centenary Engineering Awards.

Arup was awarded the Diamond Award of Engineering Excellence and Best Building Structure, in the large firm category, for its work on China Central Television’s (CCTV) Headquarters.

We established a new technological benchmark in building engineering with CCTV Headquarters. It is a highly recognisable design that comprises two towers leaning at 10 degrees with a 15-storey cantilevering link between the two. This complex design positioned CCTV Headquarters ahead of other contenders at ACE Awards ceremony.

In addition, Arup received the Research, Studies and Consulting Award for the development of its flicker minimisation tool that was created specifically to improve the viewing experience for the television audience watching the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games around the globe.

A computer programme was created by Arup’s lighting design team to reduce the strobing effects caused by high power discharge lamps. Today’s super-slow motion camera technology, filming at high frame rates, captures the flicker of these lamps turning on and off a hundred times a second, making film footage unsuitable for HDTV broadcast conditions.

This unique and innovative programme can be applied to existing as well as new sports lighting installations - ensuring the capture of the best quality, slow motion film footage without the need for expensive and disruptive upgrades.
