The Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel project has won an innovation and creativity award at the 2013 Hong Kong Awards for Industries (HKAI).

The drainage tunnel is the biggest flood prevention project ever implemented in the city, with a 11km-long main tunnel extending from Tai Hang to Cyberport, 8km of adits and 34 intakes to intercept upland flows from existing streams and drainage system at Mid-Levels. Alleviating the flood risk of the low-lying central business areas, it intercepts stormwater runoff from an upper catchment area and discharges it directly into the sea.

Arup was the consultant on the project in carrying out the design, pre-qualification, tender and construction supervision. The project sets numerous records for the city – it is the first one in Hong Kong to carry out TBM excavation and adit blasting concurrently, and pioneered the extensive use of raise boring method for dropshaft excavation.

Organised by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the award recognises innovative solutions in infrastructure projects and is intended to promote a culture of innovation and creativity among local industries.
