On 3 December 2015 Manila Water formally inaugurated the Taguig North Sewage Treatment Plant.

Located adjacent to the national heroes’ cemetery in Taguig with a treatment capacity of 75 million litres per day, the new sewage treatment facility is the largest of its kind in Manila. It serves the Taguig and Makati Central Business District areas of Metro Manila, providing significant improvements to the water reaching the downstream watercourse.

Arup has supported Manila Water on this project since 2010, responsible for feasibility study, specification development, procurement process, site supervision and contract management.

A key feature of the project is how it has been constructed underneath a new park which provides a public space and a vital green area enhancing the setting of the cemetery. We made the design of this new park a high priority – we worked closely with Manila Water and the bidding contractors to make sure that they carefully considered the park and its visual features to maximise the amenity value.

From the East La Mesa Water Treatment Plant, to the recent Future of Urban Water workshops, Arup has been actively involved in the assessment, design and management of water projects around the Philippines to enhance the development of local cities. The completion of this key infrastructure marks another significant milestone in improving sanitation and wastewater treatment in Manila.
