Arup, working in partnership with the Welsh Government, Carillion TACP, Arcadis and Jacobs, has won the Major Projects Award at the annual Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Awards for the A465 Section 3 Dualling: Brynmawr to Tredegar project.

The award recognises projects that are outstanding examples of transportation or highway projects that have been delivered on time and within budget, and have made major contributions to the accessibility and transport choices of the local or national community.

The project was recognised for providing a number of additional construction benefits, including training and employment to the local community and innovative adaption of the initial concept through smart engineering that delivered value in the actual construction.

The project was also highly commended for the Skills Development Award, recognising how it is adding value to local people by giving school leavers the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications in the form of Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships.

We are thrilled to have received this award which celebrates best practice and excellence in our industry. The A465 was a fantastic project to be involved in, and is evidence of how a road project can really integrate with - and benefit - a local community throughout the whole life-cycle of the project, not just at the point when the road opens to traffic. ”

The A8 Belfast to Larne Dualling project, which Arup worked on with Transport NI, Lagan/Ferrovial/ Costain JV and Chandler KBS, was also commended in both the Major Projects and Sustainability Awards.
