Arup is working with BIG Architects on the design of the new flagship factory for San Pellegrino in northern Italy. Our teams in Milan and New York have helped to define the energy strategy and the building services conceptual design of the project.

The 17.000m2 facility will include the new headquarters and a bottling plant that will serve as an extension to the original plant where water has been freshly bottled since 1899.

Following an international-scale tender to secure a truly innovative project, the winning proposal offers a fresh take on an ancient wisdom, revisiting the classic elements of Italian architecture and urbanism. The design includes an arcade, a viale, a piazza and a portico that create an architectural environment where production and consumption, nature and architecture are integrated to elevate the experience for visitors as well as San Pellegrino staff.

Framed by the river valley and mountains on either sides, employees and visitors will feel immersed in nature from all directions, with abundant views to the flowing river, the forested slopes, the snowy summits and the clear skies. The new landmark will rise in the form of an artistic interpretation of the water's 30-year journey travelling from the mountain’s snowy summit to the spring at its foot.

We are really glad to have the opportunity to contribute to such a challenging project and achieve a truly integrated and sustainable design. Our team based in Milan will draw on the best international expertise combined with our local knowledge to shape a design solution that meets the client's needs, is environmentally friendly, efficient and respectful of the existing context. ” Giammichele Melis Giammichele Melis Project Director
