In the 1970s, the Penang office opened to undertake the civil and structural design for the Penang Urban Centre, known as Komtar. The 65-storey tower remains the tallest building in Penang and our involvement in its revitalisation works won the 2017 Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Award for Best Project (medium building category).

Arup projects have enhanced connectivity and economy in Penang. They include the Second Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridges in South East Asia and Setia SPICE Convention Centre, for which we won the prestigious Association of Consulting Engineers, Malaysia  Gold Award of Special Merit 2019.

Our team has developed its strength in urban rejuvenation of historic cities to create sustainable and liveable environments. We worked on reviving a heritage mansion as part of the Penang Digital Library II (which won the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Gold Award 2019 in the alteration & addition category), as well as the design of the basements the 88-year-old St Joseph’s Novitiate heritage building, which earned us the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia Gold Award of Special Merit 2013.
