The Telkom Tower - a simple, slim form design and construction - iconic in the skyline of Johannesburg today.

Our first office opened in South Africa in 1954 by Jack Zunz and Michael Lewis. Since then, we have continued to showcase our expertise in design, planning and execution in the built environment across Africa; whilst upholding our commitment to developing sustainable communities. Our African Cities research ties in with on-the-ground urbanisation projects, enabling us to offer total design solutions. These include integrated building design, transport and logistics planning; large infrastructure; property solutions; and energy strategies.

Our South African teams work closely with other Arup teams worldwide, giving clients access to the full range of our global skills and experience. We deliver global knowledge, locally.

Cape Town

Arup has been present in Cape Town since 1965, playing a leading role in shaping the built environment both in the city and regionally. From 1 Thibault Square, once the tallest building in the city, to the reinvented Grain Silo Complex, our work has had a cultural legacy.

Integrated building design

Our integrated engineering team and range of specialist consultants have unlocked some of the region’s most inspired designs. We provided precinct-wide sustainability consulting for the V&A Waterfront’s world class Silo District, along with a spectrum of specialised design services to each of the buildings, including the historic Grain Silo Complex retrofit. Our multidisciplinary building engineering contributed to a holistically sustainable youth and community centre in Khayelitsha, the Isivivana Centre.

Clean energy

Our renewable energy team is considered the Arup Global Centre of Excellence due to our considerable local technical design and advisory expertise. We have contributed to projects globally in locations as diverse as Australia, Turkey and Thailand.
