Adelaide Oval, Adelaide

Transforming Adelaide Oval into a world class stadium

Adelaide Oval has hosted both cricket and football at the highest level since Colonial times and its iconic, historic and cultural presence remains today. After a 40 year absence, football returned to bring the two sports together again at a newly developed Adelaide Oval.

Transforming the current facility into a world class 52,000 seat stadium, our structural, civil, fire and facade specialists worked to ensure the heritage and culture of the original ground is maintained, while enhancing atmosphere and spectator experience.

State of the art design technologies were utilised to deliver two new grandstands rising above a shared podium and basement. The distinctive light weight roof for each stand is designed to enhance the setting within the Parklands and maintain key views towards the Cathedral past the heritage scoreboard. The redevelopment also included new and improved links and pedestrian connections to the surrounding precinct.

A true multi-sport venue Arup provided a new field of play for both football and cricket, and improving spectator comfort. Arup’s Sports Field of Play team worked closely with the Adelaide Oval curator to design and document the reconstruction of the turf playing surface, including the controversial conversion from the permanent cricket wicket block to drop-in cricket wickets. The reconstructed oval now consists of a flat turf playing surface and the profile will be capable of catering for storm events up to 100mm/hr without the loss of play.

The redevelopment placed Adelaide on the global map for a range of international and national entertainment and sporting events.

The project was awarded the 2014 South Australian Engineering Excellence Award for Buildings and Structures and the Malcolm Kinnaird Engineering Excellence Award.
