The Adriatic-Ionian Highway is a key strategic highway project for south-eastern Europe.

The Adriatic-Ionian Highway is a key strategic highway project for south-eastern Europe and is geographically next to Montenegro, creating an alternative to the current coastal highway corridor.

Arup carried out the strategic transport review for this project, using our significant international experience. Our team, responsible for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), comprised local and international experts, providing an ideal combination of knowledge and experience.

Planning the corridor

Through the SEA, Arup investigated likely impacts and associated mitigation measures for the proposed highway corridor. Our work took into consideration multiple factors, constraints and opportunities associated with the project to facilitate adequate spatial planning of the highway corridor, which is essential to maximize benefits and minimize negative impacts of the scheme.

Arup’s review highlighted that the Adriatic-Ionian Highway can provide relief to the increasingly strained coastal highway corridor, but that it may also cause significant environmental and economic impacts associated with long-distance through traffic, particularly road freight. Arup experts pointed out to the client both significant threats and opportunities associated with the Adriatic-Ionian Highway project.
