Shorten transfer time for public transport passengers

We provided technical advice and expertise to help develop smart ticketing across Bangkok’s public transport system and implement e-payments on its bus rapid transit (BRT) system. The result is seamless, integrated travel for passengers and greater efficiency for operators.

Developing smart ticketing

Drawing on our expertise in transport system technologies and operational requirements, we worked with the Thai Government to carry out a feasibility study and complete the system architecture and concept design for smart ticketing. This involved developing a common fare structure, analysing the optimum common fare level, establishing a service standard for entering the common fare system, evaluating sources of funding and exploring options for government subsidy on public transport operation.

Implementing e-payments

To help implement the AFC system for the city’s BRT network, we demonstrated how to make efficient use of stored value tickets. This involved modelling, financial analysis and considering applicable laws and regulations. We also reviewed hardware and software specifications, verified the system implementation and acted as an independent witness of factory acceptance testing.

The AFC system has been fully operational since 2011 and has shown how smart ticketing promotes seamless and integrated travel. The system on the BRT was the first of its kind in Thailand and provides the basis for implementing e-payments on feeder services to the mass transit network.
