Champlain Land Port of Entry, Champlain, New York

A sustainable modernization for a busy border crossing between Canada and the United States

Arup helped modernize Champlain, New York’s land port of entry, an important hub along one the busiest north-south trade corridors in North America.

Constructed over 30 years ago, the facility was outmoded and too small to comfortably accommodate the number of vehicles coming through. The renovation and expansion improved capacity by providing an additional 72,000ft2 of space.

Part of the General Service Administration’s prestigious Design Excellence program, the redesigned port improves functionality and enhances security for passengers and staff. The expansion includes five buildings connected through a series of roads and inspection points and provides an additional 225 truck spots, 106 car spaces, and an eight-bay cargo inspection warehouse.

We provided civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering on the project, as well as securityfire/life safety and sustainability consulting services. Arup’s integrated approach and in-depth knowledge of the LEED® commissioning process helped the design team achieve its goals with a minimum of fuss.

Our work took into account the need for phased construction to allow for the continuous operation of the busy facility.

Sustainability

For this LEED Silver project, Arup’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing and sustainability teams incorporated a variety of green features to optimize functionality and conserve resources.

Our design includes a stormwater harvesting system, low-flow water fixtures (waterless urinals, dual-flush toilets and ultra low-flow faucets), as well as carpool spaces and bike storage facilities to minimize employees’ transportation footprint. Variable-speed pumps, ventilation heat recovery, daylight controls and occupancy sensors helped achieve a 25% reduction in energy consumption compared to a baseline facility.

To conserve energy and maximize the use of sustainable, recycled, locally sourced materials during construction, we helped design energy minimization and sustainable purchasing plans.

By increasing the number of processing lanes, our civil engineering design reduced vehicle idling time, lowering truck emissions.

Traffic flow

Arup’s civil engineering team worked to expedite processing by ensuring that traffic of different types could move fluidly through the 22-acre site.

Awards

The project received a McGraw Hill Construction Award of Merit.
