With twenty-eight beds, Circle Bath is relatively small in scale, which lends it an intimate atmosphere and thus avoids the sense of disorientation often experienced in larger hospitals. ; With twenty-eight beds, Circle Bath is relatively small in scale, which lends it an intimate atmosphere and thus avoids the sense of disorientation often experienced in larger hospitals. ;

CircleBath Hospital, Bath, England

A new type of intensive private hospital

CircleBath is the first of a new type of intensive private hospital using radical concepts to redefine healthcare for new hospitals.

It is a £40m, 7,000m2 high-quality clinical facility with operating theatres, specialist departments, a day case department and in-patient single en-suite bedrooms. The hospital employs just-in-time treatment and personalised valet assistance throughout the patient journey.

Therapeutic environment

CircleBath is based around a central atrium with a five-star standard layout and modern interior design to relax patients and ease the stress of their stay.

Innovative services design has ensured the complex clinical requirements have been incorporated into constrained building dimensions.

Plant space locations and sizes were fixed prior to Arup’s involvement and proved to be too small to fit complete hospital standard air handling units. A system was devised so that interconnected air-handling units would be split in half on different floors to feed the operating theatres.

The architectural aspiration to minimise circulation space whilst maximising clinical provision has been maintained.

Natural ventilation for environmental comfort

The client required future flexibility combined with a high level of environmental comfort for both staff and patients.

Consulting and inpatient bedrooms were provided with natural ventilation complimented by comfort cooled mechanical ventilation, to optimise environmental conditions and minimise energy consumption.

The hospital received a RIBA Award 2011, a ‘Building Better Healthcare’ Best Healthcare Building and a British Construction Industry Best Building awards 2010.
