The Gates and Hillman Centers is the new home for the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. The 210,000ft² project consists of two buildings, the 150,000ft² Gates Center for Computer Science and the 60,000ft² Hillman Center for Future Generation Technologies.
The centers include 12 new classrooms (one of which is an auditorium with 250 seats), 310 offices, 11 conference rooms, 32 closed project rooms (labs), 8,000ft² of open project space, and the Planetary Robotics Center. Both buildings are connected to each other and the rest of the campus by six pedestrian bridges. A covered garage includes 150 spaces.
The project, which achieved a LEED Gold certification, greatly increases the amount of green space and pedestrian space on West Campus. Construction of the School of Computer Science Complex began in 2007 after a lead gift of $20M from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In February 2008, the Hillman Foundation donated $10M toward construction of the Hillman Center. The project was completed in 2010.
