The specialist Cardiac Renal Centre is on the grounds of Cork University Hospital, where Arup has been involved in projects since the mid 1960s. This development involved close liaison with CUH personnel to co-ordinate services provisions to the unit.
This facility was constructed over and adjacent to the existing live hospital and has presented Arup with many complex challenges of phasing and maintaining services. The development is fully integrated with the existing hospital buildings via glazed link bridges on the north and west of the site. Arup was responsible for the civil and structural design services.
This building has a floor area of 13,000m2 over six floors comprising treatment, diagnostic and rehabilitation facilities including cardiac in-patient beds/day places, coronary care unit/step down unit, out-patient facilities, cardiac catheterisation, laboratories and a non-invasive cardiology unit.
It also includes a 35 bed Renal Unit comprising a 30 bed ward, 2 isolation rooms and 3 high dependency stations. The unit allows for a substantial increase on existing facilities and it expands and enhances the cardiac and renal services at CUH for the southern region of Ireland.
The facility features an internal atrium and is fully connected to the existing University Hospital buildings, including through link bridges at various levels which connect to essential associated departments and support services. The central atrium is designed as a focal point for the facility, but also allows views of the internal or external vistas for patients and staff using the link bridges, circulation corridors and lifts, and helps daylight to penetrate throughout the building. The completed building also provides a new main entrance and approach to the hospital.
Previous complex and interesting projects that Arup has worked on with Cork University Hospital include the Accident and Emergency and Daycare Unit, clinical science laboratories and extensions to radiotherapy, ICU, radiography and the UCC Dental Health Hospital.
