Cycling England Professional Support,

Arup has produced cycle infrastructure design for the Department for Transport

Arup has been providing technical support and project management services to Cycling England since 2006. Cycling England is an independent non-governmental agency that is financed by the Department for Transport. Arup has worked in the role of primary contractor to the Department for Transport, employing specialist sub-contractors to bring additional expertise where necessary. The work has involved:

  • Production of Cycle Infrastructure Design (Local Transport Note 2-08) for the Department for Transport;

  • Technical support for 17 cycling demonstration towns and one city;

  • Production of 'Engineering' and 'Smart Measures' portfolios for the Cycling England website;

  • Provision of a 'free' technical advice service to English local authorities;

  • Assistance to the Cycling England Board and Department for Transport with the application process and selection of recipients for central government grants;

  • Preparing the 'business case' for cycling investment in response to various government consultations to ensure that it is considered at all levels of government and across relevant government policies, including transport, health, education, sport and tourism;

  • Working with Ministers, MPs and local Councillors to ensure that cycling is understood as part of the political agenda.

During this time Cycling England has been successfully able to demonstrate the value of targeted investment and the annual budget and programme of works has substantially increased.
