Arup played a key role in the successful opening of Dubai’s second airport, Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central in October 2013.
As the project manager for the complete operational readiness activation and transition (ORAT) of the airport, we ensured a smooth transition from an empty building to a dynamic operational facility. All the airport’s systems and facilities were ready, operational processes defined and agreed and its all staff were recruited, trained and in place for the opening.
Seamless operation from day one
Al Maktoum International is aiming to become the world's largest airport in the next five to ten years with an ultimate capacity of more than 160 million annual passengers. The smooth ride experienced by passengers, airlines and operators from day one has helped enhance the airport’s reputation as it works towards that goal, telling a positive optimistic story for Dubai and for aviation in the region.
Extensive operational trials
To ensure everything worked perfectly from the outset, we managed 52 separate airport operational trials. These tested processes such as the response to a total airport power failure, catching a public bus to the airport and even checking-in a domestic pet. Two more advanced trials included over 1,300 volunteers to simulate the entire end-to-end passenger experience.
The success of Al Maktoum International’s opening builds on Arup’s record of successful airport opening days. We’ve now completed over ten separate ORAT projects across the Middle East, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
