Foisor Hospital, Bucharest

Refurbishment of a hospital in Bucharest to include new functional buildings.

Founded in 1892, the Foisor Hospital is the only state hospital in Romania for orthopedic-traumatology and osteoarticular tuberculosis. It had become too small to support the number of patients and the latest requirements for proper treatment, so the building needed an extension and a renovation.

On the site, which comprises 3,700m2, there were three original buildings, all built in different stages. Two of the buildings have been demolished and reconstructed, with the third one being renovated. Additionally, two new buildings are to be added to the complex. All five buildings will be functionally connected and integrated and once complete, will cover an area of 17,500m2.

Arup has been commissioned to manage the construction process of a compact hospital, adapted to the current requirements in the field of orthopedics and traumatology performance. In order to satisfy the needs of the hospital, it is remaining fully-functional during the renovation and rehabilitation works. Once complete, Foisor will have more surgical operations rooms, new technical equipment and an underground parking area.
