Retrofit design of the plant structures, following seismic studies

Beyond seismic report

Following the earthquake of August 1999, Arup was appointed by Ford Otosan to carry out structural, and geotechnical assessments, and a mechanical and electrical seismic report of the current facilities and requested to make proposals for future development and construction. The Golcuk factory site is located on a delta in Izmit Bay.

As a consequence of the seismic assessment studies, the client invited Arup to continue the works to carry out retrofit design of the plant structures. In addition to these works Arup were requested to perform infrastructure design of the plant site and compound area and jetty. The jetty is for the export of cars and import of steel coil plate and car parts.

After the first phase works, Arup continued structural design works for new plant buildings and the extension of the existing buildings by using site specific spectra in accordance with the scenarios identified in the seismic assessment report prepared by Arup. The total indoor area of the plant is about 400,000m2 after extension works.

Jetty

The jetty has two berths with 'roll on-roll off' facilities and crane capacity for car carriers of up to 35,000 tonnes dead weight and general cargo vessels of up to 7,000 tonnes dead weight. It is in a seismic area on alluvial ground. Fendering was a significant issue because of the difficulty of controlled berthing of high sided car carriers in an area subject to high winds.
