Grangegorman Masterplan, Dublin

Masterplanning for a new city quarter in Dublin with a diverse mix of uses

Arup won an international competition to become the master planners for the Grangegorman Development Area. This strategic plan will provide education & health facilities to the residents, including services such as roads, water, drainage & utilities, public transport requirements, refurbishment of listed buildings, recreational facilities, research and development facilities.

Prior to the start of this master plan, Arup conducted a number of studies including a transportation assessment, which aimed to identify the capacity of the road and public transport networks to accommodate this large development.

Transport and sustainability appraisal

The Arup transportation team had a significant input in identifying circulation and parking strategies, as well as on the design of the public realm with a strong focus on the accommodation of sustainable modes of travel, such as walking, cycling and public transport. Among the proposals included in the masterplan, was the creation of an extensive internal network of pedestrian priority links, including a number of shared surfaces.

Arup was also commissioned to undertake a sustainability appraisal of the Grangegorman Draft Masterplan. The sustainability of the masterplan was appraised using our Sustainable Project Appraisal Routine (SPeAR®) framework. A biomass CHP plant will act as the energy centre for a campus wide district heating scheme.
