Greater Manchester heat networks, Greater Manchester

Heat network feasibility studies for three areas of Manchester.

Heat network feasibility studies were completed by Arup for three areas of Manchester: the Manchester Corridor, the Manchester Civic Quarter Phase 2 (NOMA), and an expansion of an existing heat network at Salford’s MediaCityUK).

Arup is enabling Manchester and Salford City Councils to make an informed decision on the future of heat networks within each city area. Energy master-planning, stakeholder engagement and detailed technical and economic analysis was undertaken to provide robust and credible proposals for heat network solutions.

Manchester Oxford Road Corridor

The Manchester Oxford Road Corridor is a leading UK location for knowledge-based businesses, covering 243 hectares and home to a 55,000 strong workforce. Taking an innovative approach, Arup proposed a solution whereby multiple potential heat producers provide heat to a transmission network in addition to supplying their own heat needs. The benefits for Corridor stakeholders wishing to become heat customers or heat producers were clearly defined in our approach, and careful consideration was given to infrastructure constraints to develop a long-term solution for investment by the local authority. The economic case was presented in the form of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) setup to build, own and operate the transmission network.

Manchester Civic Quarter Phase 2 (NOMA)

The main focus for this area of Greater Manchester was on the existing and proposed buildings at the NOMA development. The Arup team investigated opportunities to expand beyond the development, to both existing and proposed heat loads in order to maximise potential revenues from heat and electricity generation.

MediaCityUK

The third project focussed on the existing heat network system at MediaCityUK (Salford). Arup investigated the technical and economic feasibility of extending the existing heat network to proposed MediaCityUK phases, and also beyond the development boundary into existing and planned developments.
