Turkish Airlines (THY) planned to construct an Aircraft Heavy Maintenance Facility for its developing and growing fleet to serve the national and regional civil aviation sector in Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SGIA), Istanbul.
Arup was the principal consultant responsible for facility planning, scheme design and preliminary design of this new 220,000m² maintenance, repair and overhaul facility at SGIA.
A challenging design
The development was designed to provide state-of-the-art maintenance and the challenge was to incorporate all the facilities in a relatively small site with a change in level of 20m. The construction necessitated an integrated system of communication streets with vertical connectivity for the efficient movement of staff and materials.
The project included a nine bay narrow bodied aircraft hangar, a twin bay wide body aircraft hangar, a wide body paint hangar, 120,000m² annex workshops, 36,000m² engine centre and test cell, engine test pen, 500 space multi-storey car park, welfare facility, security installations, bus terminal and a 5,000m² headquarters building.
Arup were the principal consultant responsible for the facility planning and scheme design of this new maintenance, repair and overhaul campus. Arup provided architecture, multidisciplinary design, facility planning, project, design and cost management, fire engineering , geotechnical engineering services.
