InterContinental Hotels Group,

Assessing the risk to hotels from earthquakes, floods and windstorms

Arup helped the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) to assess the risks that natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes, windstorms and floods, pose to their North American property portfolio and to negotiate more favourable insurance terms.

The process began with desktop portfolio risk assessment. Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology, Arup’s specialists mapped IHG’s properties and categorised them by hazard zone and insured value. This combined information was used to form risk ratings across the estate and enabled IHG to prioritise site survey works for those hotels most at risk.

As part of the site surveys, Arup outlined areas of vulnerability, generated detailed loss estimates and recommended a range of risk mitigation options.

This has not only enabled IHG to develop more mature risk management approaches and negotiate more favourable insurance terms, but has also given local management an insight into how to improve risk management on a day-to-day basis.
