Kilden concert hall, Kristiansand

A 1200 seat concert hall built for the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra

Arup led the acoustic design of the 1200 seat concert hall, built for the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. The performing arts centre also includes a 700 seat theatre, multipurpose hall and studio spaces, designed by ALA Architects, with Brekke Strand providing the remaining acoustic design services.

The hall is based around a traditional shoebox format with stalls and two balconies, which wrap around the orchestral platform. As well as presenting the classical musical repertoire, the hall can be used for amplified music events. Extensive sound absorbing banners are used to adjust the acoustic for the hall.

The tonal quality of the orchestral sound is beautifully blended, with balanced warmth and brilliance. The exceptional dynamic range of the orchestra shows the hall at its best. The KSO have embraced the acoustic of the new hall and look forward to a full programme of events after the official opening in the new year.

“One of the most important endorsements of a concert hall is the experience for the musicians who perform there. Acoustics are critically important for musicians of this calibre and we have found it a pleasure to rehearse and perform in this wonderful space.”
- Bjørn Danielsen, Manager of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra ”
