LUAS Green Line (B1-400), Dublin

7.5km light rail extension to the south of Dublin

The LUAS Green Line B1 project involved a 7.5 km light rail extension to the south of Dublin.

The project consists of 12 stops over a combination of semi-urban and green field settings. There are over ground and ‘at-grade’ sections with four associated sub-stations for power requirements.

Started in May 2007, the project was opened to passengers in October 2010.

Seamless transition

Strong design management was a key feature throughout the project, with Arup’s project management team providing a constant and proactive support to the contractor and RPA.

Arup also provided systems integration support, allowing for a seamless transition from an existing light rail system, to an extended light rail system. An interface management was employed to highlight all inter-related and inter-disciplinary connections, which reduced the risk of conflicts in the construction phase.

Arup’s site supervision role included the management of all physical integration issues between the different design supervision teams.

The project achieved complete integration and interface design management and the optimisation of operational safety and design through visibility assessments and performance studies.

Arup was also responsible for the systems integration, the migration of the central control system and associated systems as well as Line B1 and Line C1 extensions to new platforms.

Other important services included the management of the Safety Assurance processes through the design stage, working closely with the RPA’s Safety Acceptance Working Group (SAWG), production of the New Works Assessment on behalf of the RPA and liaison with the Railway Safety Commission (RSC) concerning the safety approvals.
