The Marine Cargo Terminal (MCT) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is an important strategic component of the airport’s aviation logistics and comprehensive transportation services. There has been robust growth in throughput at the terminal since 2001 and the existing site is beginning to experience a shortage of cargo handling space.
Arup’s objective was to assess existing and future conditions, constraints and competitive landscape and form a full understanding of the terminal’s expansion needs and optimum location. The results would help to inform sustainable development to strengthen the status of HKIA as an air cargo hub.
Strategic role
The study also accounted for upcoming government infrastructure projects such as the Hong Kong Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities, the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and ongoing road infrastructure improvements.
The strategic role of the MCT was re-examined and the pros and cons of locating the terminal on-airport or off-site in proximity to these important infrastructure developments was assessed.
Arup conducted a site search considering land use compatibility, navigation requirements for shipping vessels, environmental impact and local traffic arrangements.
From the findings, a strategy, masterplan and optimum location for MCT was developed.
