The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel is a landmark in Melbourne’s Docklands area. Arup’s specialists brought global structural expertise to the project having worked on some of the world’s largest observation wheels including the London Eye, Singapore Flyer and the Las Vegas High Roller.
Owned by Sanoyas Rides Corporation, the Melbourne Star is one of a kind – featuring the largest compression wheel in the world. Key to its structure is the 3-dimensional diamond spoke design providing an elegant symmetry to the overall aesthetic.
Initially engaged to conduct a review of remedial works proposed for the original Wheel (not by Arup), it was agreed replacement of spokes and rim would be more feasible and a new design commissioned. Arup’s structural designers produced numerous alternative design concepts of which one was chosen and a re-design deployed.
The new design features efficiency of steel work, with a reduced number of connections facilitating a rationalised construction and fabrication process. This innovation saved on both fabrication and inspection time, and facilitated an improved maintenance regime. The design also provides a well resolved truss system with noding up to the rim, maintaining the pointed star form.

Opened to the public in December 2013, the Melbourne Star provides 360-degree views of the Melbourne city and its surrounds.
The Melbourne Star was awarded a Steel Excellence Award in Engineering Projects at the 2014 Australian Steel Institute (Vic) Awards and a High Commendation in its category at the 2014 National Steel Excellence Awards.
