Design review for nine new stations

Metro de Santiago is the most extensive metro system in South America. The ongoing project to add the new 3 and 6 lines will extend the reach of the network by 28 stations and 37km in total.

Arup conducted a design review for 9 new stations where the new lines will interchange with existing stations.

The design review identified the challenges for development. These included consistent accessibility, increasing the efficient use of space and commercial development and urban integration strategies.

A subsequent commission to carry out feasibility design and optioneering for the stations incorporated a new approach to ventilation to ensure life safety; integrated concourses for optimum station sizing and a flexible construction methodology.

Arup’s interchange design, station planning and transport architecture specialists, increased the efficient use of space and created strategies for commercial development and urban integration.

The ventilation work incorporated a new approach to ensure life safety; integrated concourses for optimum station sizing; and a flexible construction methodology. Together, these save approximately 40% of the original plan area and reduce construction costs.
