The project comprised the northern half of the Blue Line, Bangkok’s first subway network. The works comprised 10km of twin bored tunnels, 1km of cut-and-cover tunnels and nine underground stations.
Arup acted as lead consultant from tender preparation through to construction, providing full design consultancy services for structural, civil, geotechnical, tunnelling, mechanical, electrical and sanitary engineering disciplines.
We pioneered the use of concurrent tunnelling and station construction after extensive detailed analysis and careful scenario planning and optimisation. The adoption of this innovative approach accelerated the overall construction programme by three months, resulting in substantial cost savings for the client.
