Upgrades to roads and passenger infrastructure

The new 100,000m² Central Terminal Building (CTB), commissioned by ACSA, is centrally located within the existing airport precinct at Africa‘s largest airport.

The terminal’s strategic position provides seamless movement between the previously disconnected International and Domestic terminals and easy access between the departure area of the CTB and the International Terminal Building.

The CTB building needed to provide space to accommodate existing facilities from the early stages of construction. Temporary terminals were built and others closed to allow for efficient construction with minimal disruption to existing services.

The R2.3bn facility and associated infrastructure can accommodate 20m passengers each year. It provides an integrated transport network, including a rail commuter rail network system, and accommodates the new A380 aircraft.

Arup provided conceptual design, masterplanning and project management services, ensuring the project was completed on time and within budget. The airport remained operational throughout the work.

The building received a South African Institute of Steel Construction award for engineering and bridge structures.
