Platja de Palma is an urban beach near a residential area. The transformation initiative, promoted by Playa de Palma Consortium and Spanish Central Government, aims to complete a comprehensive revitalisation (urban, environmental, social, and economical) of the area, with a sustainable approach. It is planned to be carried out over the next 25 years.
Sustainability strategy
Arup is responsible for the sustainability strategy for the project. Sustainability is a key priority in the transformation plan.
Arup specialists have proposed ways to improve safety and environmental quality, generating a sustainable destination which has minimal impact on the climate and can adapt to climate change.
Integral urban regeneration measures (including hotels and parks) add new facilities to those currently existing.
Among the main action methods are:

Reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through the zero emission of CO2 and provide 100% of energy through renewable sources.

Improve the water distribution system, reduce consumption and guarantee quality with a minimum energy cost.

Improve the waste collection system, reduce waste generation, maximise its increase in value and create 'zero waste dumping'.

More sustainable and accessible transport, reduced traffic and the use of electric transport to obtain zero carbon emissions.

Limit increase in housing numbers and improve aesthetics and energy efficiency of existing stock.
