In 2010, Arup provided specialist services for the development of the feasibility studies for the expansion of Venice Airport.
The studies covered the terminal extension up to 2030, the provision of landside automated people movers and a new transport interchange to connect Venice airport with high speed rail, regional rail services, a future underground connection and links to the water port.
The extension enables the airport to increase its capacity from 6.5mppa to 13mppa and beyond improving overall passenger experience, number of contact gates, and accessibility for all modes of transport to the terminal building.
Several options were explored and evaluated driven by the configuration of the terminal and its compatibility with the airside and the landside facilities.
The work involved complex demand/capacity analysis, development of a programme of requirements, infrastructure expansion options, investment planning, applying planning standards, benchmarking, land-use planning, option evaluations and future requirements impact studies.
The extension provides up to 18 gates, with significant improvements to aircraft stand utilisation opportunities with the provision of Code E MARS stands as well as defining a commercial strategy to enhance non-aeronautical revenues.
