Scottish Livingstone Hospital, Molopolole

350-bed hospital serving a village of 60,000 people

The Government of Botswana is investing significantly in modern healthcare facilities as the effects of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses become widespread.

Arup was appointed to undertake the design and construction supervision for this modern 350-bed hospital.

Chilled water air-handling units are used to cool patient areas. Chilled water is supplied via variable-speed pumps that are flexible enough to save energy when lower levels of cooling are needed. Heating is through radiators using low-temperature hot water.

The use of solar control glass and recessed windows contributes to a lower overall cooling load in an environment where ambient temperatures of around 40ºC are common.

Other services under Arup's responsibility included heating, ventilation and air conditioning; public health and fire.
