Echoing the 2010 Shanghai World Expo’s theme ‘better city, better life’, the Urban Best Practice Area (UBPA) at the former Expo site will be developed into a worldwide showcase of low carbon and eco-friendly cultural development.
Located on the west bank of the Huangpu River, the two parcels of land containing 18 existing pavilions and four new buildings are now home to art galleries, shopping centres, hotels and offices.
As the low carbon planner and sustainability consultant, Arup has assisted the project to obtain LEED® Neighbourhood Development Platinum ( LEED-ND) pre-certification, making it the first of its kind outside North America.

From planning to implementation
We established an integrated set of sustainable development strategies, drawing upon our multidisciplinary skills in transportation consulting, energy strategy, water engineering, ecological construction, waste management and microclimate.
We also provided low carbon and eco-design guidelines and devised an implementation framework for the entire redevelopment.
As a result, our planning is in unison with the local residents, striking a fine balance between preserving the site's historic charms and entwining modern elements to create a vibrant community.
Enhanced connectivity
Re-provision of infrastructure coupled with the dense planting of native species enables a good public transport network and encourages bicycle usage and walking.
Water management
High efficiency water fixtures and carefully selected paving materials that both reflect sunlight and allow water penetration were adopted to ensure reduced heat island effect and aquifer recharge.
A low impact design stormwater management strategy has been developed to reduce run-off. Rainwater reuse will save 40% of potable water annually.

Energy efficiency
PV panels and solar collectors generate electricity and provide domestic hot water.
At a building level, an average of 24% energy saving over all the 22 buildings has been realised.
